What counts and what does not
- All CEUs must be earned inside the cycle they are used for. Extra CEUs do not carry over, and missing ones cannot be made up after the date.1
- Learning events from Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) Providers count, and 25 minutes of learning equals 0.5 CEU. Publishing an article on behavior analysis in a peer-reviewed journal counts 8 CEUs.1
- There is no limit per activity type, but repeating an activity does not count.1
- Each entry’s documentation must show the CEUs for its category: general, ethics or supervision.1
The dates the planner calculates
- Your recertification date is the last day of your 2-year cycle. The next cycle starts the day after, and CEUs for it only count from then.1
- The application opens 45 days before your recertification date and can only be submitted once enough CEUs are entered.1
- After the date, the certification is inactive: no billing, practice or supervision. If your CEUs were complete, you have 30 days to reinstate by paying the late fee, and no new CEUs can be earned in that period.1

The 2027 change for BCBA supervisors
The BACB’s 2027 requirements, which take effect on January 1, 2027, list 4 supervision CEUs for BCBA supervisors instead of 3.3 Neither document says how this applies to a cycle that started before that date, so the planner counts 4 when your recertification date is in 2027 or later. Confirm with the BACB.

How many CEUs does a BCBA need to recertify?
32 CEUs in each 2-year cycle, including 4 in ethics and, if you supervised RBTs, BCaBAs or trainees at any point in the cycle, 3 in supervision. The ethics and supervision CEUs count toward the 32. BCaBAs need 20, with the same 4 in ethics and 3 in supervision if they supervised RBTs.
When can I submit my recertification application?
It becomes available in your BACB account 45 days before your recertification date, and it can only be submitted once you have entered enough CEUs. Submit it on or before your recertification date.
What happens if I miss my recertification date?
Your certification becomes inactive and you may not bill, practice or supervise. If all your CEUs were complete by the date, you have 30 days to reinstate by paying the 50 dollar late fee. After that, the certification is lost and you would need to reapply.
Do extra CEUs carry over to my next cycle?
No. CEUs above the requirement cannot be applied to the next cycle, and CEUs for the next cycle only count once that cycle starts, even if you recertify early.
