RBT Supervision Calculator: the 5% Monthly Minimum and Required Contacts
What it is and what it is for
RBTs must receive ongoing supervision for at least 5% of the hours they spend providing behavior-analytic services each calendar month, at each organization. This calculator turns an RBT's monthly hours into minutes of supervision and tracks the other monthly rules of the BACB's RBT Handbook (updated June 2026): two real-time contacts, one individual contact and one observation of the RBT providing services. It comes with a printable monthly log.
Key facts
Monthly supervision calculator
Use one calendar month at one organization: the BACB does not let you add up supervision from different organizations.
This is the BACB minimum. Your payer may ask for more: Florida Medicaid follows the CASP standards and the supervision plan of the approved behavior plan.

The monthly rules
- Supervision of at least 5% of the hours the RBT spends providing behavior-analytic services, each calendar month.1
- At least two face-to-face, real-time contacts a month; phone and email do not count.1
- In at least one of them, the supervisor observes the RBT providing services. In person is preferred, and video conferencing is allowed.1
- At least one contact is individual, with no other RBTs or trainees present; the other may be a small-group meeting of 2 to 10 RBTs.1
- Video monitoring on its own, without real-time interaction or feedback, may not count as supervision.1
One organization at a time
The RBT must meet the requirements at each organization where they provide services: 3% at one organization and 2% at another do not make 5%.1 Every client the RBT works with needs a supervisor or Requirements Coordinator.1 Ongoing supervision and professional development are separate requirements, and one event cannot cover both.1

Payers can ask for more
The BACB sets the minimum. Florida Medicaid requires supervision of BCaBAs and RBTs according to the current CASP practice standards and the supervision plan of the approved behavior plan.3 Check each payer’s rules for your clients.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours of supervision does an RBT need each month?
At least 5% of the hours the RBT spends providing behavior-analytic services in that calendar month. 5% of an hour is 3 minutes, so 120 service hours need at least 360 minutes, which is 6 hours, of supervision.
Can supervision be done by video or by phone?
By video, yes: contacts may use web cameras or video conferencing, as long as they are real-time. By phone or email, no. Video monitoring on its own, without real-time interaction or feedback, may not count.
Can an RBT combine supervision from two organizations?
No. The RBT must meet the requirements at each organization where they provide services. The handbook's example: 3% at one organization and 2% at another do not add up to 5%.
Who can supervise an RBT?
A BCBA or a BCaBA. The noncertified RBT Supervisor role was eliminated, and supervisors must complete a training based on the BACB's Supervisor Training Curriculum Outline (2.0) before supervising.
